Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Adult stem cells taken from fat and "cloned!" (link)

SC ( 03/14/2004, 08:46:00 )

This article describes the isolation of adult stem cells from cells removed during liposuction operations:http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/03/040309074344.htmMost of it isn't that surprising, but one or two sentences have some interesting implications. Usually, the word "cloning" is used pejoratively, in other words, associated only with those forms of cloning that people object to (this generally means somatic cell nuclear transfer). However, this article uses the dreaded "c" word in association with adult cells:"For their study, the Duke team took liposuction samples from three adult donors and then grew clones of these cells for up to 25 doublings. The cells were then exposed in culture to one of the four recipes -- mixtures of vitamins, growth factors and steroids -- for reprogramming cells into either fat, bone, cartilage or nerve cells."Another interesting teaser is the following:"Guilak believes that as a result of the successive culturing, the stem cells may have lost their ability to turn into fat cells."Maybe someday someone could base an anti-obesity treatment on what we learn from culturing stem cells?
