CloningIntro Picture for me if you will, someone close to you whether it is your boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband or parents. One day they seem fine but the next minute they get up and start grabbing their chest and they fall to the floor. You realize that this person is having a heart attack. Your adrenaline kicks in and you jump up, you rush to the phone to dial 9-1-1. You begin to perform basic life support until help arrives. This person is raced to the hospital and is resuscitated but with heart damage. Right now this is unfixable, most people wait a very long time for a heart transplant, but with cloning this can be fixed. How you may ask….I. Doctors would take the healthy heart cells, clone them and inject them into the damaged areas of the heart. The healthy cells would eventually replace the damaged cells and the heart would function once again properly. Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States and in several other countries as well. That killer could be fixed as stated by the Human Cloning Foundation. This is just one of many several benefits of cloning. II. Cloning is defined as: a precise genetic copy of a molecule including DNA and cell tissue: plant, animal, or human. What scientists have been able to do is take an egg cell from a mammal and fertilize it. These cells were thought to be unchangeable but they soon discovered that they could be these specialized cells, which was first discovered by Dr Ian Wilmut who was head of the Dolly research program. III. Because of this cloning could be used to replace much-needed organs of your body. If a person needs a kidney transplant doctors instead would be able to take healthy cells and build and organ outside of the body. When both the patient and the new kidney were ready, an implant could be performed. Cloning organs could save countless lives of people who die while on a transplant waiting list. Cloning could also be used to produce skin for burn victims, brain cells for trauma victims, and spinal cords for quadriplegics. Brain cells and Spinal cords can’t be repaired if they become damaged but through cloning they could be possibly be repaired. These are just a few of the possibilities of cloning. IV. You might be sitting there thinking to yourself; hmm he must watch too much science fiction, growing human organs?! Well the truth is right now no one can no for sure what can happen with cloning. Laws prohibit some and limit other areas of cloning and without experimentation and research; we cannot know what is possible or what isn’t possible. V. Others of you might be thinking, “NO WAY, cloning is playing God.” There are many instances where people already alter their lives in this manner. Birth control pills stop a pregnancy from occurring. Abortion stops a life before it is able to survive on its own. Scientific research has made it possible for premature babies to survive, and elderly people to live longer, and more productive lives. Couples who are unable to have a child sometimes undergo vitro fertilization in order to become pregnant and have a child. Through research and experimentation, immunizations and vaccinations have been developed that have saved millions of lives. Aren’t all of these examples of ways that people alter human lives and in effect, play God?! VI. There is still a lot left to be researched; childhood leukemia…muscular dystrophy…. cerebral palsy….cancer. If someone you knew had any of these diseases, wouldn’t you want them to survive? What if you knew a cure was found but involved cloned cells? Would you then decide that they should die? VII. Cloning is defined as a precise genetic copy of a molecule including DNA and cell tissue. The possibilities of its benefits are untapped right now. I’m not suggesting that entire humans be cloned. I am encouraging people to think about how cloning research could be beneficial. Cloning is a scientific field that has yet to be fully explored. Closing Now lets go back to my opening. The year is 2020, imagine that this heart attack victim is you, you are getting ready to go to work, and your kids just left for school. Your spouse is right behind you and you feel a sharp pain in your chest and you drop to the floor. You’ve been rushed to the hospital. It doesn’t look good…Think about it Cloning research could some day save your life.
