libfemme ( 03/15/2004, 01:12:15 )I spend a great deal of time talking to high school students, and the occassional social science teacher. The less someone knows about science in general and biology in particular the more fantastical their imagination of what science means.It is an immaturity problem. Infants by nature are self centered. Mother exists only so long as they can see her. They suffer separation anxiety as soon as she is outisde their line of sight. Adolescents imagine that everything they do is being noticed and judged by everyone else, as if they are on center stage and the world revolves around them. Growing up entails realizing you are only one of many and yet being confident in your ability to fend for yourself. You don't have to be the center of the universe to survive. You don't have to be important to other people in order to be important to yourself.Societies go through simular steps of development that individuals do. Some people in society are not making the transitition well, realizing that a "mom-figure" is not going to be there to protect you from all danger or provide for you, and being ok with that. You can attempt to educate such people with patience, and then step around them as best you can.
