Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Re: Read some books, people!

libfemme ( 04/13/2004, 00:05:11 )

For a long time I resisted the idea of genetic determinism. In a just world everyone would have the ability to rise to the greatest human potential. But after many years of experience, and reading research, I have reluctantly come to accept that in the world we really do live in, people are only as good as they can be. Some people simply are not able to understand abstract ideas or verify reality. While they can sound out words when they read, they really cannot understand what they read, so they stop reading. There is no use railing about it. As a teacher I have known that the literature says the grade a student earns in his first year of school is usually the grade he earns in his last years as well. In other words C students start out as C students and consistently earn that grade through out their education career regardless of what class they are in. Likewise B students are consistently B students through their career. Despite all the effort on the part of parents and teachers the reality is that students, people, learn at their capacity and no more. That's not to say that if you work very hard, one on one with a failing student you can't get them to memorize a certain body of facts and to parrot back the information. In that sense you can get them to raise their grade temporarily. But try as you might, you cannot teach some one how to think for themselves if they don't already have that ability. I wish it were otherwise but I have come to accept that people have limitations.I would counsel patience. The majority of people who exist is based on the majority of people that reproduced in the last generation. It says nothing about the rightness or wrongness of certain ideas. It just may be that the majority of people who exist cannot understand scientific ideas. They are not faking it. They are incapable. Why should you waste your time? I cannot say, but I can tell you why I take my time here: To find that diamond lost among the rubbish. I write, not for the person who posts, but for that person who stumbles onto to my words, hungry for answers in an otherwise chaotic world. And because the ability to make abstract connections is a function of brain capacity, students really do get more intelligence as they mature. Most of the people who post here are still very young. They are students, in secondary school or college.
