Huh?libfemme ( 04/22/2004, 08:44:55 )Now you've floored me. Are you sure you are reading the right post? Because try as I might I do not see that I used the word longevity or therapuetic cloning any where in my response. Was your reply perhaps misplaced? On the off chance that you really were responding to me, I'll answer that:1)I am not confusing reproductive cloning and therapuetic cloning/stem cell therapy. I was quite purposeful in my statement and my intent. I refuse to abandon one in the name of the other. It a little something I like to call principle.2)I'm sure it was a slip of the tongue butEvery where, is a very big place. Since the Internet is global you can never depend upon forum members being from only one particular country. As a matter of fact we have a number of people posting here who are from someplace other than the USA.And while it may seem to you and me that what is passed in the USA government should apply to the whole world, the fact is citizens of other countries seem to ignore US law on a regular basis;even insist on enacting their laws. What can I say? So any law passed in the US would not apply everywhere.3)I also seem to be having trouble finding a law called the Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2003. There was a bill, H.R. 534, that was called the Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2003, but that never passed the US Senate. The last major action I can find on that bill was it was introduced into the Senate as S 245 IS and the last legistative update was 3/3/2003 Read the second time. Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders. Calendar No. 23 In fact there have been a number of cloning bills introduced in the US Congress. None have passed into law. According to the Office of Legislative Policy and Analysis: H.R. 234 was introduced by Representative Weldon on January 8, 2003, and was referred to the House Committees on the Judiciary and on Energy and Commerce.H.R. 534 was introduced by Representative Weldon on February 5, 2003, and was referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. It was reported favorably by that Committee on February 25. H.R. 534 passed the House of Representatives on February 27 by a vote of 241 to 155. It is unclear whether there are sufficient votes in the Senate to pass H.R. 534 or its companion, S. 245.H.R. 801 was introduced on February 13, 2003, by Representative Greenwood and was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. H.R. 801 was offered as a substitute amendment when H.R. 534 was being considered on the House Floor. That amendment failed by a vote of 164 to 237.H.R. 916 was introduced on February 25, 2003, by Representative Stearns and was referred to the House Committees on Energy and Commerce and on Science.H.R. 938 was introduced on February 26, 2003, by Representative Paul and was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.S. 245 was introduced by Senator Brownback on January 29, 2003, and was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.S. 303 was introduced by Senator Hatch on February 5, 2003, and was referred to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary. source: http://olpa.od.nih.gov/legislation/108/pendinglegislation/cloning1.aspCan you cite me your source for when the President signed this bill into law?4)By the way, since you brought up House bill H.R.534 specifically let me quote directly from it: d) PENALTIES- `(1) CRIMINAL PENALTY- Any person or entity that violates this section shall be fined or imprisoned for not more than 10 years, or both. `(2) CIVIL PENALTY- Any person or entity that violates any provision of this section shall be subject to, in the case of a violation that involves the derivation of a pecuniary gain, a civil penalty of not less than $1,000,000 and not more than an amount equal to the amount of the gross gain multiplied by 2, if that amount is greater than $1,000,000. (source: see link below)So I believe I have accurately described what the intentions are of persons, such as yourself, who active seeking to criminalize reproductive cloning. If enacted into law a woman would be subject to a 10 year prison term and a possible million fine for implanted something in her own uterus. So how am I not portraying you acturately? ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
