Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Giving the Devil Half

libfemme ( 04/16/2004, 11:43:47 )

Nicely written, but I have to disagree with your conclusion. Though most who have posted over the years on this forum with me may not realize it, I really have no personal interest in reproductive cloning. I have my family, the old fashion way, and I'm satisfied. But I've been lucky and that is precisely why I go to bat for those who need the support. I think you are very wrong to believe that those who vehemently oppose cloning do so only on the "ick" factor. The diehards are very well aware of what they are against and it is right to determine ones longevity and health. It is ultimately the right to self ownership that is at stake.I have deliberately choosen to put my effort behind reproductive cloning rather than therapuetic cloning because it is the "difficult sell." We win here, we win self ownership. We lose, and it's just a slippery slope. In a compromise with the devil only the devil wins.Cloning cannot be separated from the issue of freedom of scientific inquiry. It cannot be separated from self ownership and civil rights. Reproductive cloning cannot be separated from reproductive freedom and women's independence.I don't make compromises on those issues. We don't need to prove our right to reproduce, to ownership of our bodies, to the right to seek medical attention, to the right to freedom of inquiry. Those are rights that have already been fought for and won. It is a matter of defending them now. It is legal to clone a human cell in the United States (where I am from), rights are assumed to belong to the citizens unless prohibited by law, not the other way around. We don't need to gain the right reproductive or therapuetic cloning. We need to defend it! Giving the opposition half a loaf of what they are not entitled to will not them more agreeable. It will only be a first step for them. If you doubt that you are not reading them carefully. There reasons for opposition are fundamental, and unequivical. So is my stand on medical and scientific freedom. You want to put a woman in prison for 10 years for the so-called crime of implanting an embryo in her own uterus? Expect to see the LibFeminist at your gate!
