Do you know what you fear?libfemme ( 04/19/2004, 19:46:43 )Don't blame cloning for Hitler. Hitler's plans for a master race involved encouraging German women to marry young, stay home, and produce large families by sexual reproduction.Would it be right, therefore, to blame all sexually reproducing parents for what Hitler stood for? It would certainly be closer to the truth.Genocides have existed in human history long before any scientific or medical technologies. Genocides are about purging the world of other people, people unlike ourselves. The Huns did it. The Turks did it. The English colonialists did it.Genocides are not committed by the scientific people in society. But are often encouraged by the religious. Care to match lists?Cloning, by contrast, allows peoples who are otherwise unable to reproduce the ability to have a family and to mingle their genes in the gene pool with the rest of us. Without cloning some people's genes would die out. Cloning is the antithesis of Hitlerism.Quoting from your post: If we are sick, do we want to be recreated? If we are infertile, do we want to manifest children?Do you realize what a Hitlerian statement you just made there? Think about it. It is a precisely a Hitlerian idea that the "less" perfect should not reproduce simply because they are less perfect. This is why Hitler killed the jews, the gypsies, and the mentally ill.If you are afraid of Hitler, be afraid of you, dearheart. You have absorbed Hitler's attitudes completely unaware of what you are doing. You are on automatic pilot, reacting to fear. Hitlerism fears on fear, particularly vague and unexamined fear.I can hazard a guess at what you really fear. You probably fear bringing the wrath of a vengeful and erratic God down upon you because someone in the community dared to seek good health without begging God for it. In the old testament God is indiscriminate in his wrath. When a few people break his laws in a city, the entire city is put to cinders. God is a way of answering the question "Why did that natural calamity" happen to us? Science is another way of answering that question. "You built your city under an active volcano. Move next time."When Mount St Helena errupted in 1980 far fewer people died than died in Pompeii in 79 A.D. Does this mean that God is more pleased with modern man than with mankind a couple of millenium ago? If so, we need more science not less, because that's what distinguishes us from that age.It is an article faith in Christian religion that disease and death are punishments visited on us for the disobedience of our ancestor, Adam. Through out the centuries known as the Age of Faith people who were disfigured or diseased were shunned. Sons were disinherited if they were born with birth defects. Lord Bryon was made to feel mortally ashamed of being born with a club foot. One's physical appearance, so the idea went, indicated ones moral virtue. Witches were always old crones with warts. Attractiveness was Godly. Unattractiveness was a sign of corruption. Victor Hugo was not being satrical when he set his novel of a hunchback in the Cathedral of Notre Dame. The idea that physical illness is evidence of unworthiness is a canon of religion not of science. Why are the infertile unworthy to have children? You have a child. If your child is ill do you take him to the doctor? Does that make your a monster? Perhaps you should let your child suffer without medical care, for that would appear to be God's judgment on the matter. Perhaps you should not vaccinate your child against measles or diptheria. If God wants him to die of those diseaes who are you to prevent it?An infertile person has a physical condition akin to any other disease or malfunction. They as much right to seek medical attention for their condition as any other patient. That seeking medical attention should be labeled immoral is archaic and inhumane, to say the least. You claim you oppose cloning on the basis of morality. But what is your kind of morality? That people are base and should accept illness and death as if they were common animals? That the greatest sin a human can commit is to use his mind, the organ that most makes him different from all other animals?Man is able to think. He can reason. He can discover why and how he becomes sick or deformed and he can change that. That you claim is evil? I'm sorry, dearheart but if that is your idea of evil then I cannot follow you. I think you fear being wrong, feeling less intelligent, less capable than other people. You have little self respect and you dislike other people who do because it makes you aware of it. You fear science because it points out that you don't have to live your life cowering under a rock afraid of a boggy man. And you are embarassed to admit that's what you've been doing all these years. I think you should be. ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
