Illegal Beings: Human Clones

The Best Shots

SC ( 04/21/2004, 06:51:33 )

This outline doesn't strike me as very interesting or realistic at all. At first, it doesn't sound controversial enough; the reaction of the law and the media is much too uniform. It should also be less controversial toward the end, since a real live baby is born that was conceived through cloning, people are likely to become more accepting of the practice, just as they did with in vitro fertilization.Fiction often suffers in quality from the premise that if one sets out to write fiction, it isn't good fiction unless it's tragic (a lot of news coverage is also based on this premise). This plot outline is much more cynical than what you produce when you write an essay, yet your essays are what people like the most. People will buy and read more enlightening and optimistic material if it's available. Even those opposed to cloning are much more interested in what pro-cloners have to say; the rate at which people post on this site must be at least an order of magnitude greater than on the Dixon site, for instance.Whether the cloning story ends happily or not is up to you. For you, opposing the anti-cloners is like shooting fish in a barrel. If your story is to ring true, I think it should reflect that. I don't know why Voltaire keeps coming up as a quotable person on cloning issues, but here is another one that I think applies as well:"God is not on the side of the great battalions, but of the best shots."The trick is to avoid aiming at your own foot.
