Injection to stop cheating
libfemme ( 05/17/2005, 12:06:30 )Scientists have a created a simple injection that would prevent cheating.A single gene inserted into the brain can change promiscuous male rodents into faithful, monogamous partners.Researchers at the Yerkes National Primate Research Centre of Emory University and Atlanta's Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CBN) in the United States said their experiments on voles, could help to explain the neurobiology of romantic love.There are two populations among the rodents,prairies voles and meadow voles. The prairie voles form life-long partnerships while the meadow voles are promiscuous. Researchers found that the faithful prairie volves had higher levels of receptors for the hormone vasopressin in an area of the brain called the ventral pallidum than did the meadow voles. Vasopressin is the hormone secreted during bonding, such as infant-mother bonding or romantic love.Researchers used an inactive virus to transfer the gene from monogamous prairie voles into the brains of their randy relatives, the meadow voles. The gene increased the levels of the receptor and increased faithfulness among the meadow voles.Vasopressin receptors in humans might also play a role in how people form relationships and in the future it may be possible to cure infidelity. Instead of a vow at the altar, a spouse might instead make a trip to the doctor to prove their commitment to a marriage.
