libfemme ( 05/10/2004, 19:25:11 )What makes cloning beneficial is that some couples cannot be helped by invitro fertilization.In order to fertilize an egg, you have to have an egg to start with. If a woman has lost her ovaries due to cancer or she has gone into premature menopause, then she has no eggs to fertilize. She can use an egg from another woman, but then the offspring would be genetically related to that other woman, not to her. In effect it is a form of adoption. Cloning, however, allows a woman to produce an embryo that is genetically related to her, but using another type of cell than an egg. For a couple in which either the man or the woman, or both, are not capable of producing viable sex cells (eggs or sperm) cloning provides the only way to have a child that is genetically related to one of them and no one else.
