Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Cloning is a valid medical procedure

libfemme ( 05/17/2004, 19:04:29 )

If it is wrong to be a genetic duplicate, then there are millions of natural identical twins and triplets in the world that would be condemned as immoral. Genetic duplicates are not new. They are called twins and they have always been with us. Civilization has not fallen.DNA does one thing exceedingly well, that is make copies of itself. As a result, every human on this planet is already 99.9% genetically identical to every other human on the planet. Your gene for making insulin or hemoglobin is in all probability identical to mine.It is only in a margin of genes that any two people differ, genetically at least. There are a great many difference between people that are not genetic differences, however. Different physical and biological environments, different parents and upbringing, different marriage partners, jobs and experiences. We are not the sum total of our genes. We are not 100% genetically determined. To oppose cloning on the grounds that two people would share the same genetic makeup is ridiculous. Even identical twins are separate people with different personalities and lives. Everyone knows that, or should.Cloning only refers to genetics, not to any other aspect of an individual's life. Is it immoral for you to take a blood transfusion from me if we have the identical blood type, and hence the same blood gene? Does it lessen your individuality if you and your brother share the same parents, and hence have some genes in common? Having copies of the same genes is what makes us the same species, makes us family, makes us human. It is irrelevant to our individuality as a person, however! The problem lies in our misunderstanding about, and our fear of what genes are and what they can do. True, genes are vastly important. More important than we have given them credit for in the past, and YET, they are still not the only significant part of us. They do not control all of our destiny. They do not rob us of individuality.Medical cloning may not something that every person may necessarily do in their lifetime. There is no need. But for those people who need to clone either for medical reasons or to start a family, it is one more medical option that needs to be available. It needs to be available, precisely because people are individuals. Just like organ transplants. Some people will need it, and some people may never. But it should be available as an option for those who need it.
