Split in the Catholic Coalitionlibfemme ( 05/20/2004, 00:37:53 )In 2001 Argentina was one of the countries along with the United States and the Holy See, campaigning for a resolution in the United Nations to outlaw all forms of human cloning. That resolution was shelved.But it looks now as if the coalition against all forms of cloning is breaking up. Panama became the first central American country to permit therapuetic cloning earlier this year. Regional rivalry and competition may force other latin countries to follow suit.The Argentinean secretary of science set up a committee advise their president on the ethics of cloning. That committee is now urging a change in Argentina's position, to permit therapuetic cloning. Argentina has a small cloning industry started. In August 2002, a cloned calf, 'Pampita', was born in the Argentina, and an Argentinean scientist, José Cibelli, was a close collaborator with the South Korean scientists that produced the first cloned human embryos in February.This along with pressure on US President Bush, indicates that the anti-cloners are losing ground.
