libfemme ( 05/24/2004, 14:08:28 )A private company in Britain estimates that in 10 years all new mothers in Britian will be asked if they want stem cells from their babies umbillical cord frozen for later use if the child develops an illness.It costs about £1,250 to have the cells extracted, then stored for 25 years. Since the procedure was developed in 2001, 3000 families in Britain have signed up for the service.I see this as a great opportunity. When children who have their stem cells banked are saved while other children suffer, people will begin to see the issues in a different light. Republican congressman who signed the recent letter to President Bush asking him to revise his stand on federal funds for therapuetic cloning research, said that meeting actual victims of illness, diabetes, Parkinson's disease patients etc is what changed their minds.
