I see this as a very personal decision that the couple involved have the right to make without censure.Sure it's better to have a living father than not. It's better to be rich than be poor. Better to have a lot of things. But life is never perfect, and people live with what is. A great many children grow very secure and normal who are raised by one parent. The children of deceased firemen, policemen and ordinary people, do not all have psychological problems or feel they have been deprived. What matters is the quality of the care given, the degree of financial support available and the supportive network of relatives and family members to make a complete loving environment.None of these women, I am sure, prefer to raise a child alone. It's not their first choice. But it is their second. If they lose their husband, must they also lose their change for a child?Having a child with someone you love is a very personal decision. I would never want to have children by any other man than my husband. He is a very special person to me. Although I don't think I would make the same choice these women are, I certainly can understand the desire, however.Women who marry men in high risk jobs know what the risks are. Having a child may lessen the pain of losing him. It also means that a part of him continues on. Children are our immortality. They are the biological reason for our existence.The thought of a wonderful man dying and leaving nothing of himself behind is, I am sure, very painful to these wives. So I cannot condemn people who make this choice. I would offer as much emotional support and acceptance as possible to make their decision easier.
