Boom In Stem Cell Research

libfemme ( 06/01/2004, 03:25:14 )

Although the first embryonic stem cell line was created in the United States, the majority of new embryonic cell lines are now being created overseas says the International Herald Tribune. The number of stem cell lines available in the world (but off limits to researchers using US federal funds) now stands at 51 and will probably reach 100 by the end of the year.3 of those new lines have been established at a lab in Brno in the Czech Republic. The Czech lab, funded by the Czech government, had once been so poor it used old rum bottles as flasks, but now they are talking to Harvard Medical School about collaborating on future research. Obviously, the ban on US government funds for embryonic research has been the best thing for world research labs in years. Labs in Singapore, Israel, Sweden and Finland have developed new embryonic stem cell lines which do not use mouse cells as feeder cells, while only 1 US lab has done so.
