Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Harvesting Sperm Cells

libfemme ( 06/03/2004, 09:20:14 )

Johns Hopkins issued a press release today saying they were able to turn bone marrow stem cells into liver cells in just 7 hours. That when transplanted into mice with damaged livers, the cells began to function as healthy liver cells two to seven days later.Researchers on the project says this type of stem cell technique could be used to treat as diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease and cancer. Human trials have not started yet. http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Press_releases/2004/06_01_04.htmlJust a few days earlier, the same university claims to have taken sperm from fruit flies and reversed them into stem cells. Sperm are a deal easier to harvest then some other stem cells might be. Would there be as much controversy about “wasting” sperm to make stem cells as there has been about egg donations? This sperm reversal technique, they believe, may be possible to use on other types of specialized cells, in effect they may have discovered the regenerative properties that salamanders and other animals have, that can re-grow new tails after the have lost such a limb. Perhaps this technique used on sperm, could be used some day to induce the body cells to regenerate an amputated limb or grow a new kidney inside you instead of needing a transplant organ from someone else.Johns Hopkins doesn’t’ say they have tested this technique on human sperm yet, but the question has got to be why not? Human sperm is easy to harvest. I’m sure there would be no end of willing donors. Would they really need FDA approval before trying to reverse sperm cells into stem cells in a petri dish?http://www.washtimes.com/upi-breaking/20040518-082816-7132r.htm
