Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Monopolies

libfemme ( 05/24/2004, 14:28:00 )

I don't think Malikar realizes that of the so-called "64" lines that NIH claimed were available for federal funds, nearly half of them were controlled by less than 10 individual organizations, including private companies such as Geron. More to the point, Geron had just bought the Roselin Institute, the lab that had cloned Dolly. Geron was moving its cloning facilities out of US territory and into more hospitable Britain. Some people feared Geron might be slow to provide US research teams with stem cells, if their own profit making subsiderary in Britain were competitors. After all just because the President of the United States says you can buy 'em doesn't mean the individuals involved were under any obligation to sell 'em.On the otherside of the ledger, biotech companies are not the only science tech businesses. The computer tech's have a lot of money and in California they are using it to support a state ballot initative to fund $3 billion for research using any embryonic stem cell line. So far Silcon valley families have contributed nearly $2 million of the $5 million raised to campaign for the initative. The Catholic Church doubts that will be able to raise even a million to fight it.So there's money, and then there's money. When life is at stake there's a lot of people with skin in the game.
