Do moms 'steal' cells from their babies?

In an report in the medical journal The Lancet, researchers have found male stem cells in women more than 50 years after they have given birth to boys.They suggest this could benefit the mother, replacing ageing cells and helping to explain why women generally live longer than men........researchers had identified "male" bone cells in women who had given birth to sons. Earlier studies have linked foetal cells that persist in a mother's circulation with autoimmune disease. Sometimes a mother's immune system recognises the cells as "foreign" and attacks them, causing inflammation...It could explain why bone marrow transplants from a mother to her child are less likely to be rejected than from a father to his child."Intriguingly, the fact that mothers seem to obtain more stem cells in adult life, replacing the ones they were born with, might explain why women live longer than men and why pregnancy may prevent or protect against diseases such as multiple sclerosis or breast cancer,"
