Humans are only another animallibfemme ( 05/26/2005, 23:41:41 )The question is, how do you know that people are promiscuous for reasons other than genetics? Just because people have assumed something in the past, that love is a conscious choice, doesn't necessarily mean that is true. It may sound nice, but does it hold up to investigation?Consider identical twins separated a birth. At one time twins up for adoption were split up and given to different families. That means their upbringing and environemtn were different. However, being identical twins it meant their genes are still identical. Any characteristics the twins had in common later in life would more likely be due to genetics which they shared, then to environment which they did not.The Minnisota Twin's Family Study researched such twins separated at birth to find out what had happened in their life. It was expected that choice of occupation would be different because it was assumed that environment determines job preference. But to the reseacher's surprise twins were more likely to have the choosen similiar jobs, suggesting a genetic predisposition.Furthemore, it was expected that twins would have married similiar spouses. Certainly we are drawn to certain types of people who fit the needs of our personality are we not? But to everyone's surprise that isn't what the data showed. There was no similiarity in the type of person identical twins fell in love with, but there was a great similiarity in the time they fell in love. Twins fell in love and married within days of each other. It suggests that who we fall in love with depends on who is around when our instincts kick in and tell us to fall in love now. We really do love the one you're with.Is this disconcerting? Probably, but consider other strong bonds of love we form. Most people love their mothers. Whether she's good or bad, kind or indifferent, no one is immune to feeling a tug of the heart about their own mom. Yet, we have no control over what woman becomes our mother. We are programmed when infants to fall in love, to bond, with our primary caregiver. It is genetic.A mate is a very basic evolutionary choice. Mating is connected to sexual procreation as far as nature is concerned. Mating for life, or at least a very long time, insures the survival of human offspring who have a very long childhood compared to other species. A strong mate bonding instinct is vital to survival of one's genes and hence has been selected for in evolution. No promiscuity is a particular reproductive strategy which maximizes the number of genes one can pass if one is male, or increase the odds of finding a strong, healthy mate if one is female. It is countered by the fidelity strategy which says staying around increases the odds that the offspring you create will actually grow up and pass on your genes again. The two strategies compete with each other in the gene pool. Sometimes one strategy is more successful, sometimes the other. Love, I am afraid, is a chemical, Oxitocyn to be exact, a hormone in humans similiar in structure to vasopressin. Gene therapy just might work to change the behavior of humans more than we like to think. ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
