Early speculation shows better odds for KerrySC ( 11/02/2004, 16:39:34 )The last time I looked, stocks tied to stem cell research were surging (one stock is actually called Stem Cell Research, the other is Geron), even when the market was discounting a Bush victory. The U.S. stock markets gave back their earlier gains at the close of regular trading on speculation that internet exit polls showed Kerry leading in some swing states, and Kerry has taken the lead over Bush for the first time in Presidential futures trading:http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000101&sid=aD8l2.oLGJYM&refer=japanKerry is more popular than Bush among younger voters, many of whom are voting for the first time and have no "land lines" (phone connections other than their cell phones). This led one commentator to speculate that Kerry support was higher than it appeared, because people who have no regular phone connections can't be contacted by pollsters.Kerry has proposed to remove Bush's restrictions on which stem cell lines would be eligible for federal funding, and to increase federal funding for embryonic stem cell research to $100 million a year from Bush's $25 million. However, the biggest stem cell proposal being voted on by Americans tonight is California's Proposition 71, which has been backed by Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has also been posing with Bush the last few days. The National Institutes of Health has also been importing newer and better embryonic stem cell lines from Singapore, in apparent contradiction of the 2001 Bush ban. In other words, Bush has circumvented his own restrictions to a small extent, while not publicly proclaiming open support for embryonic stem cell research, probably to avoid alienating his support base among evangelical Christians. The short answer is that Kerry would be better than Bush, but what happens in California is probably more important from an overall funding perspective, since the California proposition will fund embryonic stem cell research to the tune of $300 million a year. ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
