Re: Vitalism and the "soul"

babyblue@flash.net ( 11/15/2004, 14:55:04 )

personally i believe in vitalism. how else can one distinguish between life and nonliving organisms? i am not sure if this helps with the question on when the soul enters a persons body but it makes sense to me to think that once a baby's body has formed that at that exact moment the soul enters which gives that baby life. if there is no such thing as a soul then how would someone explain when people die and are revived they claim to have seen a white light. now obviously it wasnt their actually eyes that saw this white light because they were already pronounced dead so it had to have been their so called soul. vitalism seems to make a very important point in the fact that this vital force gives life in the fact that only organic organisms live and die, inorganic organisms do not live and they do not die. granteed that they are put into simpler forms but they still stay the same. i read that vitalism is also defined in the terms that inorganic organisms can be heated and changed into a different form but once the heat is removed, they eventually go back to the same state in which they started in however when an organic organism is heated it changes and when the heat is removed the organism never returns to the state at which it started.
