Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Methuselah Mouse Prize

libfemme ( 04/11/2004, 21:22:37 )

Because some people may still not be aware of it, I'll repeat it here: a University of Cambridge theoretical biologist has founded the Methuselah Mouse Prize, a monetary award for the researcher who is able to extend the life of the common laboratory mouse. Research done in such a mouse model can then be applied to human longevity. The first award was given last June to Dr Andrzej Bartke for his mouse, dubbed GHR-KO 11C, which lived for 1,819 days. (The equivalent of 180-200 years in human life span)It is expected that gene therapy or stem cell therapy might be what unlocks the secret to ageing. Since therapuetic cloning is another phrase for stem cell therapy, the fight to keep cloning legal, unemcumbered by governments or social prejudice, this prize is right in line with the goals of many on this site.
