Instead of selective breeding of animals and hybrid seed crops, farmers will buy and raise clones of the most choice individual animalor plant depending on what they want to market. There will also be cloned fungus (mushrooms and yeasts for the bread/beer industry), cloned bacteria for medicine, cleaning the environment (oil eating bacteria to clean up spills etc.)But that'll be old news. What will really set the rearguard's teeth on edge will be "Designer Genes." Instead of making exact copies of what is already known (cloning), we will be inventing genes that have never existed in any species before. It will be trendy for couples wanting to have a family to undergo genetic counseling and instead of "avoiding" having babies if there is a chance of an inherited disease, or aborting fetuses that show an abnormality, instead they will "fix" their own germline before fertilization. They will pay to have their own individual genome sequenced (it'll take about 24 hours to get the results back and cost around a thou)and then excise any potential defective or disesase genes in their genome. If they can't eliminate them, the will 'silence' them by having them turned off, or they will insert new invented genes. This of course will be illegal in humans, and cause no end of conferences and handwringing among the 'do-gooders' who want to stop other people from engaging in dangerous experments, until an illness hits their own families and then they will sneak out and join the bandwagen as hypocrits always do.In other words, it will be business as usual.
