Post Darwinismlibfemme ( 12/25/2004, 16:59:49 )Charles Darwin did not invent evolution. While not wishing to take anything away from the man's admitted brillance, he was not some lone nut who wrote a book and suddenly everyone dropped their bible. Darwin stood on the shoulders of giants who came before him. A brief list of the people who proposed or added to evolutionary theory over the centuries would include:Anaxiamander (611-547 B.C.), the Ancient Greek philosopher and Lucretius (99-55 B.C.) the Roman philosopher, both claimed that all living things are related and that they have changed over time.Aristotle taught that living things advance from inanimate matter to plants, then animals and finally man in his "Ladder of Life."Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo independently examined fossils and concluded they were the remains of once living organisms not inanimate objects. James Hutton (1726-1797), the Father of modern Geology, applied his theory of slow change over time to living creatures as well and proposed an early form of natural selection.Charles Lyell (1797-1895) refining Hutton, wrote that the antiquity of the human species is far older than theologians claimed. (It was Lyell's Principles of Geology that Darwin took with him on the Beagle.)Swedish botanist Carl Linne (1707- 1778) came up with a hierarchical system in which each species was a subset of a still higher category, a system of classification used by evolutionists today.Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) in a forty-four volume natural history of all (then) known plants and animals provided evidence of descent with modification. He speculated on the various mechanisms of change including influences of the environment, migration, geographical isolation, overcrowding, and the struggle for existence.Eramus Darwin (1731-1802), naturalist and grandfather of Charles Darwin, wrote that all life had a common ancestor based upon the observation that animals go through similar changes during development, the results of artificial selection by human breeders and farmers, and the presence of vestigial structures.William Smith (1769-1839) an engineer employed by coal mines developed the Principle of Biological Succession which states that each period of earth history has its own unique collection of fossils. Smith fathered the science of stratigraphy, the correlation of rock layers based upon their fossil contents.Baron Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) a proponent of catastrophism, the theory that geological events formed as a result of some great catastrophe (such as Noah's flood) eventually proposed that there had been not one, but several catastrophes and after each one a new period of creation. Louis Agassiz (1807-1873) proposed 50-80 catastrophes and creations.Jean Baptiste de Lamarck (1744-1829) proposed one of the earliest theories of how evolution takes place. His theory of acquired characteristics was supplanted by natural selection.Alfred Wallace (1823-1913) traveled extensively and independently came up with the theory of Natural Selection in 1858. He sent a draft of his proposed paper to Darwin for comment. Darwin, who had been working on the same idea for years, proposed that they publish jointly, Wallace taking credit for the theory and Darwin providing the back up evidence from his own travels and journals. Shortly thereafter Charles Darwin (1809-1882) sent his own manuscript, the Origin of Species, which he had been working on for 20 years, to his publisher. But his was not the last word. Genetics, the other half of Natural Selection, was added a half century later in the work by Mendel, de Vries, Hardy & Weinberg, Hunt-Morgan etal. Evolutionary theory is being added to and refined still today in the laboratory of DNA chemists, comparative anatomists and paleontologists around the world.
