Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Virgin Birth

libfemme ( 12/29/2004, 12:18:37 )

Discussing what methods of making stem cells anti-abortionists would approve or disaprove I cam across this recent article Playing Word Games with Human Cloning, Stem Cell Research.Smith claims that somatic nuclear transfer is another word for cloning. I agree. However at the bottom of the article, Smith makes this claim:This is nonsensical on its face. An unfertilized egg doesn't develop embryonic stem cells;embryos do. http://www.lifenews.com/bio622.htmlSure they can. From the New Scientist 4/28/03:... biotech firm Stemron of Maryland has grown parthenogenetic human embryos to the blastocyst stage, at which stem cells can be obtained. Cells taken from one of the embryos survived for a few days. http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn3654Obviously Smith doesn't do his research. And this is the main problem for anti-abortionists. They don't study science, therefore they don't understand the meaning of the words used.To anti-abortionists any cell that can be developed into an individual is an embryonic cell. Any cell that can't be is ok.The problem is nature doesn't follow the same rules. Any cell can be made into an embryo. And when this starts happening, in a few years, it will be harder and harder for anti-abortionists to come with a definition of embryo that distinguishes it from stem cell.
