So what is and what is not an embryo?libfemme ( 12/30/2004, 14:52:09 )Japanese researchers have created pluripotent stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent stem cells. Has Japan created embryonic stem cells then?Ah, but they didn't start with an egg. No, they started with a proto-sperm.A news article said The scientists extracted stem cells that would grow into sperm from a mouse immediately after it was born. One month later, the scientists found some of the cells were shaped like ES cells. They separated the cells that looked like ES cells from others and cultivated them under the same conditions as ES cells. As a result, the cells multiplied without differentiating. According to the scientists, the characteristics and functions of the cells are similar to ES cells. Now separating embryonics stem cells from "other" cells is exactly what happens when ESC are harvested from embryos. Did the Japanese scientists create embryos? What is an embryo? If they did create an embryo what does this mean about the moral value of sperm? When does the human being become ensouled? Are does God regularly create millions of proto-babies in every sperm stem cell which are fated to die? This was the problem the theory of preformation faced in the 18th century. It is now the problem anti-cloning activists face. When you get down to the level of an individual cell where is the soul in that? ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
