Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Why we can't give in to the anti-cloning lobby

libfemme ( 12/30/2004, 15:56:04 )

Singapore is creating ``a center of excellence in stem cell research". Last year they opened Biopolis, a 2 million-square-foot complex of laboratories and offices devoted to Embryonic stem cell research. ES Cell International, a Biopolis-based company today owns six stem-cell lines.Australia, China, India, Japan, and South Korea all see stem cell research as a way to get ahead in the biotech industry. A Chinese lab working on using using stem cells to treat ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. Korea's Chosun University claim they transplanted stem cells into a 37-year-old woman suffering from a spinal cord injury, partially restoring her ability to walk. So what?By wasting time pandering to the anti-cloning lobby the West is losing valuable people. China has recruited scientists from top universities in the U.S. to run research centers on the mainland. Singapore recruited a self-described ``gene jockey'' from Denmark. Life saving treatments from ESC's will be made. Westerners's will pay for them. Wealthy westerners anyway. But the efforts by lawmakers, policy think tanks and the media to listen to the anti-cloning lobby doomsayers is more than time wasting, it's life wasting. We wouldn't hold up a blood transfusion while a religious minority outside a hospital argued over whether God would want us mixing our blood. We would ignore them and save the patient's life.We should do the same thing with the anti-cloning lobby. People who are appalled at the thought of embryonic stem cell research can make a personal pledge never to avail themselves of any treatment based on or using ESC. Let them and their children suffer and die as they choose. But the rest of us with common sense need to stop listening to these people or give the time of day.
