Where Rights Come From

libfemme ( 01/02/2005, 14:24:41 )

There are many rights that naimals have that Humans don't! I am surprised to hear you say that. Doesn't Genesis say God gave dominion over animals to man? I would have thought you would say everything in the bible was valid. Or maybe it's just that you have no idea what the book really says?In any case, I personally would argue that only humans have rights and not because of anything the bible says. Rights are based on what's called natural law*, which is: Only humans are capable of conceiving of rights, and only humans can recognize the rights of others. Therefore only human beings are entitled to rights. For example, when some one commits a crime, they lose some of their rights in society, such as their right to free movement. We put them in prison, in other words. In our society, the consequence of violating other people's rights is the loss of some of your own. Therefore in order to have rights yourself you have to be able to recognize the rights of others. Only human beings are capable of doing that, therefore rights apply only to human beings.So-called animal rights advocates are wrong. They don't understand what rights are nor how they are derived. They would extend rights to everything, and consequently to nothing. By giving rights without requiring obligations in return they undermine the concept of rights altogether. Animals do not respect rights. Animals do not give rights to other animals, therefore they have none. Animals are not capable of rights. So what do advocates mistake right for? Human beings have the unique capacity to imagine the point of view of other things. Hence human's have compassion. Human beings may choose to act with compassion toward animals. They may choose to value animals. But this is not indicative of animals having rights, but of human's having compassion.Animal rights activists, however, are not pro-animal. They are anti-technology. They want to restrict any human behavior that is not found in a state of nature, i.e. is not animal-like. They want to reduce humans to equal status with animals. Anything that is the result of human technology, in other words something an animal could not do, they oppose. *Natural law is the philosophy that the founding fathers used in justifying the establishment of a republic. Read John Locke, John Stuart Mill, Thomas Jefferson, etc.
