A baby is a babylibfemme ( 01/03/2005, 20:36:24 )You need to study genetics. Look, every human being has 46 chromosomes. It doesn't matter when you get those 46. 1. A sperm with 23 chromosomes can fuse with an egg with 23 chromosomes and make an embryo with 46. The embryo can start to develop immediately, or it stay frozen for a time and be implanted later. It still develops into a normal baby. 2. A cloned baby also has 46 chromosomes. 23 of those chromosomes came from a sperm and 23 came from an egg at some point in time. The cloned embryo starts to develop not minutes after fertilization but years later. It doesn't change anything. The result is still a newborn baby.3. Say Joe gives a sperm with 23 chromosomes and Mary gives an egg with 23 and they come together and create an embryo. But the embryo splits in two. Both halves will continue to develop as if from day one. They will grow up to be two individuals with distinct identities and personalities but with the same genetic makeup. We call them identical twins. They happen naturally. They never looked exactly alike, because genes aren't the sole determinant of how you turn out. They will have different fingerprints and different lives. Let's call Sam and Bob.4. Ok let's do the same thing again. Joe gives 23 chromosomes to a sperm and Mary gives 23 chromosomes to an egg. The two fuse and develops into a embryo that turns into Sam. As an adult Sam finds his sperm stem cells are defected. They have the same 46 chromosomes as Sam's other cells, his skin cells, his liver cells, etc. but for some reason Sam can't make viable sperm with them. However, Sam has lots of other cells in his body. He can take one of the cells from another part of his body, which has the same 46 chromosomes every other cell in his body has including the sperm stem cells. The 46 chromosomes from Sam's skin cell is put into a empty egg (an egg in which the nucleus was removed). That cell now has 46 chromosomes and will start to develop into an embryo which can be implanted into a woman's uterus and Bob will be born. In the case of identical twins Sam and Bob are brothers. In the case of cloning Sam is the father and Bob is the son because Sam took the responsibility to have Bob made just as any father does. By cloning Sam is becoming a father. The only people who want to clone humans are people who cannot have a baby any other way. When identical twins are born they look just like singleton babies. They act just like singletons. When cloned twins are born they each look just like singleton babies when they're birth. The difference is that instead of being born minutes apart they are born years apart. But as far as Bob is concerned he's just a newborn baby. And the adults around him are his parents. It would be impossible for you to tell if a baby was conceived by fertilization inside a woman's body, by in vitro fertilization or cloned 20 years after fertilization. When and where the fertilization takes place does not alter the result. Where you conceived on a bed or a couch? Do you know? Does it matter? You are you and the details of how you were conceived don't affect who you are. A baby is still a baby.People have the right to decide for themselves the most intimate and personal decision of their life, whether or not to have children. Everyone has that right. Some people are healthy and can do so without medical help. We call that fertile. Some people have a disability and we call that infertile. But infertility is not a crime. It is not a sin. It is not a punishment. It is a medical condition. If someone broke their leg you wouldn't say "oh well limp the rest of your life, you don't have the right to walk." You would take them to a doctor and have their leg patched up!People who can't conceive still have the right to have a family. They have the same right every other couple has, to have a family with their own genes, a baby that is related to them. This is the most fundamental instinct of all people. You are too young to realize that yet, but there is a biological urge when you get to be an adult to have your own children. Not to adopt someone elses, but to produce your own. 99.9% of the people in the world choose to reproduce with their own genes and not adopt. Infertile people are no different from your parents. And they have the same right to reproduce genetically just as your parents do. ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
