The test of our two theories would be to look at two societies, one in which most of the people believed in a vengeful God and one that was primarily secular. According to your thesis the society where more people believed in a God should have a less violent society. You can find such a comparision if you look at two different time periods in Europe. The middle ages were also called "The Age of Faith". Depictions of hell were common subjects of art, illustrations in manuscripts, public buildings (i.e. gargoyles). It was a common subject of writers and sermons. In contrast Europe today is much more secular than even the United States. Which period of time would you rather live in? If you want to compare societies in the same time period, such as today, look at the difference between the domestic life in a fundamentalist moslem country and a western secular one. Moslem neighborhoods are basically tribal, run like gang terrority in US inner cities. There are frequent kidnappings off the streets, assault weapons are pleniful.The net movement of people is out of moslem world to the west not the other way around. I don't know if your remark is tongue in cheek but it certainly doesn't seem to stand up to inspection. If you are motivated to learn about science because you can't stand someone's religiousity then that's primarily a reactive motivate. If someone tells you no, then that's the thing you want to do out of spite. That makes you as predictable as the person who does whatever some one else tells him to do, and just as controllable.I am motivated by a desire to know the truth. If I were the last person on earth I would have as much interest in science as I do now. I am entirely intrinsicly motivated and I suspect that it is the same for many other scientists.
