Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Why the UN is irrelevant

libfemme ( 02/24/2005, 21:10:38 )

While the UN legal committee wrung their hands over banning all forms of human cloning, Japanese scientists announced they had succesfully cloned a human kidney using rat embryos as hosts. They "removed rat embryos from the uterus, implanted human stem cells -- treated with neutrophic factor genes to help the organ development -- into the area in the embryos where the kidneys were being generated and cultured the embryos in vitro."Now did they culture rat embryos or human embryos? What's your pick? Its a chimera, certainly, part one species and part of another. But in nature there is no sharp dividing line between one species and another as there is in the Bible. We are not separate creations but offspring of one common ancestor, and therefore share the same genes and mechanisms of reproduction. What is a human clone? An set of genes that originated from a human being, or the cytoplasm of an egg that originated from a human being? Which part of the human embryo contains this fragile "soul"?The UN is woefully uneducated in biology and genetics and consequently their edicts are worthless. They are unenforceable because they are undefinable. And of course because the Brits and Koreans are going to ignore them anyway.
