Re: The Negative Side of Anything?

SC ( 03/07/2005, 16:59:16 )

Not only is the earth not running out of oxygen, it can't run out of oxygen. If all oxygen recycling stopped tomorrow, there would still be more than a thousand years of supply of breathable oxygen in the atmosphere. In order to keep oxygen from being produced, we'd have to wipe out out not only all the trees, but every photosyntesizing organism on the planet (algae, phytoplankton, crops...). Since photosynthesis produces all our vegetables, grains, etc., and feeds the animals we eat, we'd starve to death long before we ran out of oxygen. That assumes that we couldn't find some way to recycle oxygen without plants, of course. Oxygen is everywhere on earth. It's the second most common element in the air, the second most numerous in water (by mass, it makes up the vast majority of water, since oxygen atoms are sixteen times as massive as hydrogen atoms), and the most common element in the earth's crust. Even though oxygen isn't very heavy compared to iron, and isn't as common in the core of the earth, it's still the earth's number two element by mass. The mass of the whole earth, including the core, is 29.5% oxygen! Dixon works by bombarding people with arguments that are too vastly stupid for them to comprehend. The brain rebels at the attempt to understand such insanity. People look at the list of ridiculous arguments, much as rouge did, and think, "Nobody could be that wrong. There must be something of worth in there somewhere." That assumes that Dixon is actually interested in making sense, but he isn't. On the subject of cloning, and a few other subjects, he can't win by making sense, so he pounds people with nonsense in attempt to make their brains shut down.
